Harris County still requires it every year
Texas eliminated the annual safety inspection for non-commercial vehicles on January 1, 2025 under House Bill 3297. Emissions testing was not part of that change and is still required in 17 counties, including Harris.
Personal cars and light trucks
Yes, if your vehicle runs on gasoline and is between 2 and 24 model years old. The result has to be recorded in the state system before the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles will process your registration renewal.
The same rule covers Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston and Montgomery counties. Bexar County, which covers San Antonio, is added on November 1, 2026.
Commercial vehicles
Nothing changed. Commercial vehicles still need the full annual safety inspection in every Texas county, and they do not pay the replacement fee that personal vehicles pay.
If you run work trucks, call us and we will help you stagger the dates so they do not all come due the same week.
Electric vehicles
Electric-only vehicles are exempt from emissions inspections and stayed exempt after the 2025 change.
If you drive an EV in Harris County, you do not need a test. You still pay the registration fees.
What you actually pay, and to whom
Most people expect one charge. There are three, collected by two different agencies, and almost nobody explains this correctly.
The $7.50 replacement fee is charged whether or not you get tested. It replaced the revenue the old safety inspection used to bring in, which is why drivers in counties with no emissions program still pay it.
Inspection Program Replacement Fee
Paid to: TxDMV, at registration | When: Every renewal
Replacement Fee, new vehicle
Paid to: TxDMV, at registration | When: Once, covers two years
Emissions Inspection Fee, state portion
Paid to: TxDMV, at registration | When: Every renewal
Emissions test, station portion
Paid to: The inspection station | When: At the time of the test
The station portion is the only part that varies. DPS states that the price of an emissions test varies by vehicle and by county, so call 281-540-2000 and we will tell you today’s price before you come in. Fees current as of September 2026.
Will you fail my vehicle just to sell me a repair?
This is the question people think and do not ask, especially at a shop that both tests and repairs. It deserves a straight answer.
The emissions test is not a judgment call. A technician connects to your vehicle’s diagnostic port and reads what the onboard computer reports. The result is transmitted to the state inspection database, which is the same record TxDMV checks when you renew. It cannot be adjusted after the fact, and it cannot be adjusted in our favor.
- The result comes straight from your vehicle's onboard computer
- It goes to the same state database TxDMV checks
- It cannot be adjusted after the fact, in anyone's favor
- If it fails, the report is yours. Take it to any shop, including ours
What happens during the test
The test reads your vehicle’s onboard diagnostics system, the same computer that controls your check engine light. Two things decide the result.
Stored fault codes
Whether an emissions related fault code is stored right now. An active fault is an automatic failure.
Readiness monitors
Whether the vehicle has been driven enough since the computer was last reset for its readiness monitors to finish running.
Result sent to the state
The result is transmitted to the state inspection database, the same record TxDMV checks when you renew.
Free digital inspection
Photos, a written report, and a plain explanation of anything we find. The state stopped checking brakes and tires in 2025. We did not.
Battery replaced recently? A car whose battery was disconnected last week can fail with nothing actually wrong, simply because the computer has not finished checking itself yet. Give it about a week of normal driving before testing.
If your check engine light is on, wait
An active emissions fault is an automatic failure. If your light is on today, your vehicle will not pass, and there is no reason to pay for a test you already know the result of. Our ASE certified technicians pull the codes, find what is actually causing the fault rather than guessing from the code alone, and tell you what the repair involves before anything starts.
You have 15 days. We make them count.
Texas gives you one free re-test, but only if you return to the same station that ran the original inspection, and only within 15 days. That is a short window to find a shop, get a real diagnosis, and get the work done.
Most places that run emissions tests only run emissions tests. They hand you the failure report and send you somewhere else. We test and we repair in the same building, with the same technicians who saw the failure.

Every repair is backed by our 3 year, 36,000 mile nationwide warranty.
Sometimes we are not your best option
It is better to say so than waste your morning. We are closed Saturday and Sunday, on purpose, because that is how we keep our technicians.
A drive-through station is fine if
- Your vehicle is running normally
- There are no warning lights on the dash
- You just need the test done on a Saturday
Come to Beckwith's when
- A warning light is on
- Your vehicle already failed somewhere else
- You would rather have it looked at properly while it is on the lift
- You need it done before work, starting at 6:00 AM
Which is the whole point
Most inspection stations in Humble open at 8 or 9 and close at 5. If you commute, that means taking time off to get a test that takes minutes. We open at 6:00 AM and close at 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Drop the vehicle before work and pick it up after.
The shuttle runs all day
Free, anywhere you need to go, including the Park and Ride if you are headed downtown. You do not have to sit and wait.
Concierge pickup and delivery
If you cannot get away from the office, we will come get the vehicle and bring it back.
After hours drop off
Leave it the night before and we start first thing.
We are a Texas DPS licensed station
Beckwith’s Car Care is listed by the Texas Department of Public Safety as a licensed public emissions inspection station in Harris County, inspection type OBD.

Emissions inspection FAQ
Do I still need an inspection sticker?
No. Texas stopped issuing safety inspection stickers for non-commercial vehicles on January 1, 2025. Your registration sticker is the only one on the windshield now.
Then why will my registration not renew?
Almost always because the emissions result is not in the state system yet. TxDMV checks for it, and in Harris County it is required every year.
How long does it take?
The test itself is quick. Total time depends on how busy we are that day, so call ahead and we will tell you the wait right now.
What do I need to bring?
Your vehicle and proof of insurance.
My battery was replaced recently. Does that matter?
It can. Disconnecting the battery clears the readiness monitors, and the vehicle needs a stretch of normal driving before they finish running again. Give it about a week before testing.
Do you test diesel vehicles?
The Texas emissions program covers gasoline vehicles. Call us about your specific vehicle and we will tell you what applies.
Which counties require the test?
In the Houston area: Harris, Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston and Montgomery. The full statewide list has 17 counties.
